The Korean documentary “In the Absence” has been nominated for an Oscar.
On January 13, the 92nd Academy Awards named director Yi Seung Jun and producer Gary Byung Seok Kam’s “In the Absence” as a nominee for Documentary Short Subject.

“In the Absence” is a documentary that chronicles the occasions of the April 16, 2014 Sewol Ferry tragedy with clips and cellphone calls from that day, when over 300 individuals, largely highschool college students, misplaced their lives when the ferry sank.
The movie beforehand received the grand jury prize at DOC NYC in 2018 together with first prize on the World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest for Long Form.
The 92nd Academy Awards can be held on February 9, 2020 on the Dolby Theaters in Hollywood at eight p.m. ET.
